Foam density is a measurement of polyurethane foam that determines how many pounds can support one cubic foot. For example, if a cushion on a sofa has 1.6 foam density, it means that if somebody cut the material into a one cubic foot block, it would weigh 1.6 pounds.


The foam density values for sofas or mattresses are different to the firmness of the product. Foam density relates to resilience and longevity, with a higher-density foam giving you more support than a lower-density foam. 


High-density foams are used where there’s heavy or daily use. Mattresses, couch cushions and car seats use high-density foam. Lower-density foam is used where there’s less frequent use, like mattress toppers and bed pillows.

  • Good-Quality: 1.2LB – 1.09lb Density
  • High-Quality: 2.0LB – 3.0lb Density

Fair Quality: 0.8LB – 1.2lb Density

Fair-quality foam is at the low end of density and features less physical foam mass than higher-density foam. Fair-quality foam is prone to breaking down faster than good-quality or high-quality foam. Ideal for light and speciality uses, fair quality foam is cost-effective and is a popular foam used for packaging materials.

Fair-quality foam is popular for occasionally used products like mattress toppers in guest rooms. If the guest bed is only used a few times a year, choosing a fair-quality foam over a high-quality one can be more cost-effective. Good-Quality: 1.2LB – 1.09lb Density

Good-quality foam (medium-density foam) has a longer lifespan than fair-quality foam. While the density range between fair-quality and good-quality foam appears minor, good-quality foam is more durable and resilient. Good-quality foam is used for various applications, including back cushions, pillows, armrests for sofas, dining chairs, day beds and some mattresses.

What is the Procedure For Making 2.0 Foam Density in Furniture?


Flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) makes 2.0 foam density in furniture. This type of foam is made from polyol and di-isocyanate, additives, and water. Once mixed, bubbles form and expand before being molded into the desired shapes.

The lifespan of furniture with 2.0 foam density will vary depending on the foam’s resilience and thickness.
